Event Summary – Leading a sustainable business
The world of business is undergoing a radical transformation. Industrial strategy has been predicated on the notion of economic growth and consumption as the driver for well-being and prosperity, but that has largely ignored ecological constraints.
After decades of avoidance and denial, 2019 was the year when governments, the public and businesses recognised the need for change. As warnings and predictions from scientists become ever more urgent, campaigners like Greta Thunberg, Extinction Rebellion and David Attenborough have galvanised action. Eighty percent of the UK’s public are concerned about climate change.
This has numerous implications for business as further regulation becomes likely, customers demand more sustainable practices, supply chains are threatened, investors seek to decarbonise their assets, and resource costs become unpredictable. Analysis by the UK government’sDepartment of Energy and Climate Change and the Carbon Trust estimates that, in a scenario where warming is limited to less than 2 degrees, the global price of carbon is expected to converge at $140 per ton of CO2 by 2030 and $400 by 2050.
Clear leadership will be essential if we are to shift away from piecemeal changes such as reducing energy costs by 10% here, or waste by 10% there, to a much more radical rethinking of the entire business model. Many organisations are feeling the pressure to respond to these challenges with urgent, effective action, but what does that look like?
The Leadership Debate will once again be Chaired by General Sir Richard Barrons KCB CBE who will ensure our esteemed panel members answer your questions, exploring the challenges highlighted above as well as other challenges you see facing business leaders today andin the future. The 2020 Leadership Debate agenda is set by you, and your enquiry, providing a critical forum to challenge current thinking and offer perspectives in response to your questions.
