Autumn News from Chilworth Partnership

2022 is proving to be another year of dramatic change. Following Boris Johnson’s resignation on 8 July, after less than three years at Number 10, we saw Liz Truss take the reins as Prime Minister only to last a mere 45 days.

On 8 September, we witnessed a defining moment in history as we heard the tragic news that Queen Elizabeth II had passed, and Prince Charles was our new King.

Turbulence for the British pound

Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s 23 September mini-budget resulted in dramatic and unprecedented falls in the value of sterling. The pound rose after Kwarteng was fired from his post on 14 October and Jeremy Hunt appointed as Chancellor. Sterling also recovered ground after Rishi Sunak, former finance minister, was announced as the new Prime Minister.

A new way of working

Meanwhile, we continue to see the COVID era changing our working patterns. During the pandemic, it became the norm for almost half of working adults to work from home. Today, a quarter of all workers now operate in a hybrid manner.

Conversely, the proportion working exclusively from home has predictably fallen, whilst the proportion of people working solely from the office has now risen to 46%. It seems hybrid working is a phenomenon here to stay, particularly with the older members of the working population, the opposite being true of the younger age groups who demonstrate a clear tendency to be purely office-based.

Let’s celebrate!
